Probiotics are everywhere. You see them on every shelf - from grocery stores to health shops - promising improved digestion, better immunity, and overall wellness. But something that most people don’t realize: most probiotics don’t work, and it’s not because probiotics aren’t beneficial - it’s because of how they’re made and what they contain. Today, we’re going to dive into why most probiotics on the market fall short and how you can choose the right ones to truly support your health.
Let’s start by addressing one of the biggest issues with most probiotics: they’re just too fragile. The majority of probiotics available in the market are non-spore-forming strains, and these strains are extremely delicate. In fact, many of them start dying immediately after manufacturing. They’re not strong enough to survive in a bottle or capsule for extended periods, and by the time you buy them, most of the bacteria have already died. This means that when you take these probiotics, you’re often getting far fewer live bacteria than what the label promises.
This means that even if a probiotic claims to have billions of CFUs, those numbers don’t always reflect how many live bacteria are still viable when you take the supplement. Non-spore-forming probiotics are sensitive to heat, light, and moisture, so if they aren’t stored properly or if they’ve been sitting on the shelf for a long time, many of the bacteria may already be dead before you consume them.
The problem doesn’t stop there. When these fragile non-spore-formers pass through your digestive system, they’re exposed to the harsh acidic environment of your stomach. The acidity of the stomach is designed to break down food and kill harmful bacteria—but it also kills off most non-spore-forming strains. So, even if some bacteria survived the manufacturing process, they’re unlikely to survive the journey to your gut, making them ineffective.
This leads us to the key difference between spore-forming probiotics and non-spore-forming probiotics. Spore-formers are genetically different. They are much hardier and can survive both the manufacturing process and the acidic environment of your stomach. Unlike their fragile counterparts, spore-formers are protected by a tough outer shell, which allows them to make it all the way to your intestines, where they can start doing their job. This is what makes spore-forming probiotics far more effective.
So why aren’t all probiotics spore-formers? They take longer to grow and are much more expensive to produce. Because they require a more complex cultivation process, most companies opt for cheaper, faster-growing strains that make up the majority of the market. These cheaper strains don’t provide the same benefits because they don’t survive the journey to your gut. So, while spore-forming probiotics may be more expensive, they’re worth the investment because they actually work. You really can’t compare the two side-by-side because they are so incredibly different.
You’re investing in probiotic capsules and drinks because you care about your gut health, but it’s so important to have this knowledge so you can make informed decisions.
So what should you look for? First, it’s important to choose probiotics that are spore-forming. When spore-forming probiotics are encapsulated they go into a dormant state, similar to a seed waiting to be planted.
Think of it like a carrot seed. That seed can remain dormant until the right conditions occur. When you plant it in soil and give it water and sunlight, a carrot begins to grow. In the same way, spore-forming probiotics remain dormant in the capsule and only 'activate' once they reach the right environment: your body. This design makes them incredibly resilient and effective.
When you consume spore-forming probiotics they begin to germinate once they reach your gut, multiplying and colonizing to restore balance to your microbiome. These strains are incredibly intelligent. In fact, they can differentiate between good and bad bacteria in your gut. They work to support the good bacteria that may be lower in count, helping them replenish, while at the same time pushing out harmful bacteria that cause gut imbalances.
Beyond spore-forming or non-spore-forming, another issue with many probiotic supplements contain fillers, artificial additives, and preservatives that don’t support your health and can actually irritate your gut. You’ll often find this in trending “gut health” drinks that claim to boost digestion, energy, and mood. These products are prime examples of greenwashing - where companies market their products as "natural" or "healthy" to appeal to health-conscious consumers, but the ingredient labels tell a different story. If your probiotic supplement or drink contains additives like citric acid or natural flavors, you may be falling for clever marketing rather than getting a product that really supports your gut.
